Tips to Make Sure Your Furnace is Ready for Winter

Now that the holidays have come and gone, our region generally beginsPrepare Your Furnace for Winter to expect a cool down in the temperatures. With winter’s arrival, it is essential to keep you and your family safe and warm by ensuring your furnace is operational, secure and as energy efficient as you can make it. Certainly, the best first step is to work with an HVAC professional and schedule them to come out and inspect the furnace. Some other important steps to follow include:

  1. Change the air filters regularly –

Regardless of what the filter instructions indicate, it is a good rule to take a quick look at your filter every 30 days to determine if it looks okay or if it needs to be changed.

  1. Cover the AC condenser –

It’s important to protect the condenser from falling icicles and other debris by covering it. If your HVAC is a heat pump – you do NOT need to cover it as it runs all year long.

  1. Lubricate and clean the blower motor –

Review the owner’s manual to determine if you have the type of motor that needs lubricating. Before you do any work, make sure you turn off the power to the furnace. Then start by opening the cover and cleaning the caps and bearing. Then, you can lubricate them by removing the caps and lubricating the bearings. Also, take a look for cracks in the blower belt.

  1. Test the igniter switch –

For an older system, there may be a pilot light to relight. In a newer system, you will find electronic ignitors. If you find that it isn’t working, then try the reset button and then check your breaker. Finally, the next option is to call in a professional.

In addition to these simple steps, it is important to regularly clean and maintain the air vents and ducts and make sure you don’t have any items stored near the furnace or in front of your air ducts and return vents as they act as a fire hazard.

Continually maintaining your HVAC system is important to how well it functions and how long it will last.
